China’s "Most Liveable" Cities
China Daily reports on a survey of Chinese urban residents and investors on the country’s "most liveable" cities. The results reveal the strains the country’s rapid urbanization is placing upon urban infrastructure, in Beijing, particularly.
Shanghai placed seventh on the list. Beijing, which ranked third in the same survey in 2004, dropped to fifteenth on the list.
"Beijing is Coming Apart at the Seams." That’s the headline of a China Daily article reporting on the "frayed nerves" of Beijing citizens due to heavy traffic, pollution, and high housing costs. Concerns over infrastructure were sharpened this week when a huge sinkhole opened up on the Third Ring Road.
Major factors contributing to the cities’ relative rankings include housing prices and availability, water quality, pollution, job markets, garbage and sewer treatment, and traffic.
Top-ranked cities for living suitability are Dalian, Xiamen, Mianyang (no surprise to our friend Barry Chen), Chengdu, Wuhan, and Hangzhou.
