Is Russia Blowing a Golden Opportunity?
I recently pointed to my friend Vitaliy Katsenelson’s comments on Vladimir Putin’s seeming declaration that he will stand down in 2008 and the prospects for the Russian economy in coming years. In his post, Vitaliy noted that Russia was being offered, because of tremendous revenues from high natural resource prices, a windfall of funds to restructure its economy for the better.
BusinessWeek examines the question of whether Russia is "blowing its oil bonanza" with an informative article if you have an interest in this subject. Short answer: Russia seems to be handling the situation well right now, but the concern is whether government spending might spiral leading up to elections in 2007 and 2008.
